Got A Story to Tell refines the sweet soul sounds Thee Sacred Souls have become famous for, delivering a genre pushing collection of songs that exhibit a magnetic coolness and swagger. The relaxed quality of the musicianship coupled with Josh Lane’s heart-wrenching voice, gives the album a maturity that carries the listener through many facets of the soul music spectrum.

There is a timelessness about Californian trio Thee Sacred Soul’s delightful brand of retro soul, something that begs the question, are we really in the year 2024? Or have we climbed aboard a time machine and ventured back to 1964? The group began creating this illusion two years ago with their self-titled debut album, kicked off with the irresistible lead track “Can I Call You Rose,” which served as the perfect introduction with its suave groove, muted brass, and Josh Lane’s striking vocals, which led us to wonder whether the singer might be a long-lost child of Marvin Gaye’s.

Is this second album, Got a Story to Tell, a repeat of their first? After all, the group has spent most of their time on the road since releasing their debut. The answer is both yes and no—it’s more complicated than that. The key foundations remain the same, in keeping with the adage that you should never change a winning formula. The orchestration, however, has been enriched, with a few discreet congas here (“Live For You,” “Waiting on the Right Time”), a Farfisa organ there (“My Heart Is Drowning”), and a few female backing vocals with a more pronounced presence when they are called upon this time around. The core of the group’s already classic sound is carefully maintained, keeping hips effortlessly swaying and us believing that the mild summer evenings will last all year. Thee Sacred Souls are showing us again that there are some space-time rifts that we’re not done enjoying. – Xavier Bonnet
