Roy Kelton Orbison (English: Roy Kelton Orbison; April 23, 1936, Vernon — December 6, 1988, Nashville) was an American musician, a pioneer of rock and roll, who became famous for his special timbre of voice, complex musical compositions and emotionally intense ballads.
Roy Orbison spent his childhood in Texas, starting to perform rockabilly and country and western in his school years. Roy signed his first recording contract with Sun Records in 1956 in Memphis. However, in 1959 Orbison decided to leave the label and switch to Monument Records. In the mid-1960s, the Billboard Top Forty music chart included twenty-two songs by the musician, including such hits as “Only the Lonely”, “Crying”, “In Dreams” and “Oh, Pretty Woman”.
In 1960-1964, he released nine singles that reached the American “Top 10”, among them the chart-toppers “Running Scared” (June 5, 1961) and “Oh Pretty Woman” (September 26, 1964). In England, the singer’s work was also warmly received, and three of his compositions (“Only The Lonely”, “It’s Over” and “Oh, Pretty Woman”) occupied the first line of the British charts.
