‘Comeback Wrecker’ is officially the oldest song I have ever recorded and released,” Van Deusen says. “I wrote the chorus when I was 14. The song is about desire, shame, and cathartic anger. Musically, I wanted it to sound like a mixture of Sonic Youth, Sunny Day Real Estate, and Face to Face. It’s just a lot of fun to play.” Anthem Sprinter explores shame, isolation, and angst with Van Deusen’s typical earnestness and fervor. It serves as his sixth solo LP and his second for Tooth & Nail Records, Anthem Sprinter is a “time capsule” record of once-abandoned songs, and it serves as a sort of prequel to Van Deusen’s four-part conceptual album series, (I Am) Origami.

John Van Deusen releases new album Anthem Sprinter, a collection of revisited tracks that were initially shelved by the artist. The offering comes as a time capsule for a turbulent time in Van Deusen’s life:

“I thought this album had up and died. The songs are so old and the disconnect for me personally is so vast that I wanted to forget that it existed. I politely asked Tooth and Nail to shelve it. They were very kind about it and allowed me time to process its eventual release.

It represents who I used to be. My chaos. My selfishness. My depression. The pull towards death. Even my older musical tastes! It’s kind of difficult for me to listen to it. It’s a good example of how music retains its power over time.

In a way Anthem Sprinter is a prequel to the (I Am) Origami series; a bridge between The Lonely Forest and my solo music. I wrote most of these songs with shaky hands, stoned and disconnected.

In spite of all that, I hope some of you can connect with it… and I guess that’s the beauty of music; it transcends experience and becomes personal poetry for whoever draws strength from it. If you’re going through a breakup or feeling melancholy or struggling with anxiety or dramatically wondering if earth is alone in a vast universe of meaninglessness…maybe this album is for you! Perhaps it can be a reminder that things do indeed change and that the cloud of doom doesn’t have to stick around forever. Or maybe it will inspire you to pick up your electric guitar again and play a bar chord as loud as possible. Or perhaps it will inspire you to go listen to _______ (name of easy listening Christian artist here). It’s all good. I just want you to have a healthy day!”
