Honky Von Tonk, real name Manfred Greissel, was playing in a beer cellar in Wiesbaden, Germany, when well-known agent Derek Boulton decided that he was the kind of piano player he had always wanted to represent. Derek, with an eye on the commercial side of business, thought up the name of Honky Von Tonk, and a rather embarrassed Manfred Greissel set out on his new career complete with Bowler hat, striped waistcoat, cigar and Van Dyke Beard. Manfred moved home from Germany to England which I am sure pleased his English wife, Barbara, who was born in Leicestershire and who, incidentally, was appearing in Germany as a cabaret artiste when they first met.
