Working on a space game as iconic as Elite: Dangerous is a childhood dream come true. At the same time hugely challenging and rewarding, working on the game enabled me to grow not only as a composer but a professional in general. Overcoming the practical challenges of writing and realizing a 100 minute score, plus delivering the music for a sophisticated interactive playback system, were invaluable lessons.
The project re-introduced me to some of my favourite soundtracks and composers, seeing these in a new light and diving into different compositional approaches; which were sometimes more, sometimes less familiar. While referencing styles typically associated with the genre, I tried also to express my own personality and influences within the score.I hope I have managed to capture some sense of the nostalgia that Elite Dangerous provokes, the beauty and vastness of the Elite universe, the infinite possibilities and narratives it contains, and that players will enjoy my music on this CD as well as in the game.
FACTIONS
It made sense to me to divide exploration, arrival and starport music across factional lines and give each faction a distinct leitmotif and textural flavour.
We gave the Empire and Anarchic assets quite exotic sonic textures. The former infused with Byzantine and Oriental flavours, the latter with African and Middle Eastern ones.
For the Federation we chose to go with a subtle militaristic American mood, dominated by french horn and for the Alliance we chose more airy, romantic European classical elements.
EXPLORATION
Exploration music serves to underpin the beauty, wonder and apparent stillness of the galaxy; an accompaniment to those quieter, more reflective moments in the void (local supernovae notwithstanding).
Exploration music is broken up into the 3 main factional types, using a distinct set of textural flavours and leitmotifs for each, plus a set of assets that describe anarchy systems and unexplored space.
You’ll also hear a set of neutral thematic assets sprinkled randomly across the galaxy. These contain stylistic and textural threads that run through the entire score and which are representative of the Elite galaxy itself.
COMBAT
Combat music is a hybrid of classical and modern styles, combining synth textures and pulses with the symphonic orchestral sound.
The aim was to establish a link to classic orchestral film music and a more modern action scores. In game the synth patterns provide a lot of subtle underpinning and building of threat, whereas the symphonic sections are reserved for higher intensity action and provide more of the thematic material.
MENUS
The menu music encapsulates a sense of ambiguity, as well as foreboding “dangerous” adventures ahead. It contains some of the main motifs that re-appear throughout the soundtrack.
