Saxophonist Charles Lloyd is a musical free spirit and visionary, unique in the international music scene for more than six decades and still in full possession of his creative powers at the age of 84. As productive as ever, Lloyd released a live album in 2020 with “8: Kindred Spirits”, which was included in numerous album leaderboards of the year, recorded on the occasion of his 80th birthday in 2018.
in 2021, the album “Tone Poem” was released, the third work of his ensemble Charles Lloyd & The Marvels, a cross-genre quintet with Bill Frisell on guitar, Greg Leisz on pedal steel guitar, Reuben Rogers on bass and Eric Harland on drums.
With “Trios: Chapel”, Charles Lloyd is now opening an unusual trio project, which comprises a total of three thematically related albums, each of which presents him in a different trio lineup – a “Trio of Trios”. He recorded the first album with guitarist Bill Frisell and bassist Thomas Morgan, the second album “Ocean” (released on August 26) with guitarist Anthony Wilson and pianist Gerald Clayton, the third, “Sacred Thread” (released on October 28), with guitarist Julian Lage and drummer Zakir Hussain.
