Brenda Lee (full name — Brenda Mae Tarpley, English Brenda Mae Tarpley, born December 11, 1944 in Atlanta, Georgia) is an American singer, one of the leading pop singers of the 1950s and 1960s, who received the nickname “Little Miss Dynamite” for her petite physique (and the song “Dynamite”).
Today it is mainly known for the Christmas standard “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” (#14 Billboard Hot 100, 1960; #6 UK Singles Chart, 1962). The song, recorded when Lee was barely 14 years old, did not initially hit the charts, but 65 years later, in December 2023 (when Lee herself was already 79 years old), occupied the first line of the Billboard Hot 100 for several weeks, thereby setting several records. The last time before that, Lee topped the American charts 63 years earlier — with the song “I Want to Be Wanted” (1960). Her initial fame came from the ballad “I’m Sorry” (#1 US, #12 UK, 1960).
In the 1960s, the singer was second only to Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Ray Charles and Connie Francis in terms of the number of hits (37) on the Billboard Hot 100 lists. The total circulation of Brenda Lee’s records exceeds 100 million. Seventeen of the singer’s albums were included in the Billboard 200; the greatest success here was This Is… Brenda (1961).
